Jay Hewitt is 41 years old and has lived with type 1 diabetes since 1991. He is an elite Ironman triathlete (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, 26.2 mile run) and three-time member of the U.S. National Team for Long Course Triathlon. He is a lawyer, the father of a 16-month-old daughter, and a motivational speaker. He speaks to people with diabetes and others all over the world on fitness, nutrition, and achieving goals in life and business. The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF) announced a new, first-of-its-kind partnership aimed at helping the more than 200,000* Broward County, Florida, residents affected by diabetes. My trip began as I flew from Dallas to my home town of Philadelphia and then caught an early Amtrak train to New York City. Growing up in the Philadelphia area had given me an appreciation for U.S. history, but today I was going to learn something new: the history of diabetes. My daughter, Sarah, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2003, yet I didn't know much about the history of the disease. Living every day with the stress and worry that many parents have, I felt I had no time to spend learning how we got to the modern treatments we have today. I had focused only on doing my job as caregiver and supporter of my daughter. I was looking forward to learning something new.

Nearly 1,200 Rite Aid stores nationwide will host Diabetes Solutions Days on Nov. 2, 3 or 4 offering free health screenings and self-management solutions to patients living with diabetes, care-givers and those concerned about diabetes. Visitors also can get vaccinated against flu and/or pneumonia for $24.99 or $50 respectively, although many insurance plans including Medicare cover the cost. Vaccinations are especially important for diabetes patients because flu and pneumonia combine for the deaths of 10,000 to 30,000 diabetes patients annually, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In late July, five teenagers and five adults hiked to the summit of Mount Shavano, one of Colorado's famed 14,000-foot peaks. For this particular group, the journey to the top of Shavano was designed to be an intensive educational experience on the topic of diabetes management. Each teenager had type 1 diabetes, and the adults were mentors dedicated to helping the teens feel more in control of the disease. The team made it to the summit by performing countless blood sugar tests, counting carbs, and experimenting with insulin pump basal rates. The outfit behind the expedition was Testing Limits, an outdoor adventure club just for people with diabetes, operated by the non-profit Insulindependence.

Hi Everyone! Just wanted to let everyone know about a big event I have coming up! Next Thursday, August 26th, I am chartering a bus that I am filling with 50 of my closest friends with diabetes and traveling from Taunton, MA to New York City to invade the Today Show on NBC with my blue flamingos! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a HUGE impact on people and let everyone know about my campaign! Increasing physical activity for greater health among the American public will take center stage on May 3 with the launch of the National Physical Activity Plan (NPAP or Plan). The signature events of the launch will be a press conference at the National Press Club and briefings with members of Congress in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Prevention Research Center at the University of South Carolina are providing the organizational infrastructure for writing the plan. The implementation of the plan will be coordinated by the National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity (NCPPA). The goal of NPAP is "to encourage everyone to be more physically active, reduce barriers to inactivity, and make sure our communities and institutions provide opportunities to move."

The Diabetes Education and Camping Association (DECA) mission is to "promote communication, provide education, share resources, and serve as a worldwide voice to advance diabetes education and camping programs that meet the diverse needs of individuals and families." DECA provides an international databse of diabetes camping organizations, and "Best Practices" tools for diabetes camp management.

Rachel Humphrey, a Manhattan Beach, CA, teenager with type 1 diabetes, was granted her biggest wish (well, almost) when she came face to face with her hero, Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers. Rachel, 13, was selected to appear on the number 1 new syndicated talk show, "The Doctors," but she had no idea that she would meet Nick Jonas on the set! The second annual "Caring and Sharing Weekend" was held last weekend at the Double H Ranch in Lake Luzerne, New York. The free three-day weekend, which is organized by Pump Wear Inc., offered 15 families in the diabetes community an opportunity to relax, bond, and become inspired. The families, who either recommended themselves or were recommended by someone else, enjoyed beautiful weather, horseback riding, swimming, campfires, lots of hugs, and memories.

Nick Jonas, who has type 1 diabetes, and Bayer Diabetes Care are working to inspire young people with diabetes to achieve Simple Wins: small, everyday victories for managing diabetes that can lead to big differences over time. Their "Express Your Simple Win Creativity Contest" is designed to show kids that, like Nick, they don't have to let diabetes get in the way of their dreams. Nick wrote the song "A Little Bit Longer" about having diabetes, and he considers his Simple Wins to be writing lyrics, performing, and making music.

The 18th annual Napa Valley Tour de Cure will take place this year on Sunday, May 3rd. It's the nation's largest cycling event that raises money for finding the Cure and helping people with diabetes. This year they have a special Red Rider program: If you are a cyclist with diabetes, the Tour is recognizing your "participation, spirit, struggles, courage, and discipline" by awarding special issue jerseys made for the event. (Participants must raise a minimum of $200.)

These amazing teens-selected from 20,000 entries nationwide-were named State Honorees (along with 102 other state winners throughout the U.S.) in the 14th annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program honoring middle and high school students for their outstanding acts of volunteerism. The program is conducted by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Over the past 14 years, they have honored more than 80,000 young volunteers at the local, state, and national levels.

I was diagnosed with type 1 relatively late in life, at age 24. People sometimes remark to me, with genuine kindness, that it must have been harder on me. Perhaps they think I recall what it was like to be a "normal" child and young adult, to do and eat what I wanted without insulin, checking blood sugar, or worrying about highs and lows or long-term complications. I appreciate their sincerity, but I always correct them. Diabetes is not harder for me. It is hard on everyone. Whether you were diagnosed as a child or an adult, it complicates your life and the lives of your family.

Mansour Alzaharna is known to his neighbors in Barrow, Alaska, as the deli and food court manager at the local Alaska Commercial store, according to The Arctic Sounder, a newspaper in Anchorage, Alaska. Every year, the parent company of the AC store for which Alzaharna works sends a team of runners to the Walt Disney World Marathon, in which runners speed through the four Disney theme parks in Orlando, Florida, to raise money for charitable causes. This year, Alzaharna was among them, and he raised $12,000 for the American Diabetes Association in the process.

Try Running Kids, a company whose mission is to teach children to live a healthy lifestyle through adventure-based interactive educational entertainment (edutainment) programs in the classroom, recently announced its "Journey To Fitness" series. Here at Diabetes Health, we've learned the hard way that specific resolutions are the way to go. General plans like "I'll watch my weight" or "I'll check my blood glucose more often" tend to be less successful than the more specific: "I'll eat x number of carbs each meal" and "I'll check my BG before and after every meal."

Nick Jonas and Bayer Diabetes Care have produced dog tags that feature a lyric from "A Little Bit Longer," the song Nick wrote about his diabetes. Two versions of the dog tags are available: one for people who would like to support the cause and another specifically for people with diabetes. The dog tag for people with diabetes has the lyric on the front, but also has the word "diabetes" on the back to document their personal fight against the disease.

Today is not the first World Diabetes Day. This day was designated World Diabetes Day in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO). It has been celebrated each year on November 14 since then.

November is National Diabetes Awareness month. It's a good time to reflect on your blood glucose successes and have compassion for what you may view as failures. What's in a glucose reading anyway? This fall, the American Diabetes Association (ADA) is inviting people across the country to "Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes" by participating in their one-day fund-raising walk, being held in more than 200 cities nationwide. The routes, which range from two to six miles, will be accessible to people of all ages and levels of mobility. All along the walk, participants will be supported by volunteers offering water, snacks, entertainment, and enthusiastic encouragement. The event draws a large contingency of individuals and teams composed of families, friends, and corporation employees, all walking and raising money in support of the ADA.

The exhibit hall at this year's Children with Diabetes conference in Orlando, Florida, from July 23 to 27, 2008, featured expensive and elaborate booths from well-known companies like LifeScan and large organizations such as the American Diabetes Association. But another kind of company also welcomed people to their booths. They were the diabetes start-ups, companies that were started more often than not because of an intimate connection to the world of diabetes. I spoke to representatives of five of these companies about their products, their mission, and their inspiration.

The members of the AADE are an impassioned group who genuinely want to make a difference in their patients' lives. It was an ideal place for me to be, especially because I had a concern of my own: Why am I getting red dots every time I inject? Every educator I asked went right to work examining the problem and investigating my behavior, truly wanting to help. Unfortunately, they are dwindling in number each year, while patients are increasing in number, making their work ever more demanding.

Researchers Adeola Akindana and Laura Want explained that diabetes education may be an integral part of a clinical study, as it was in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) and the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). But most diabetes studies have an education component even when it isn't specified in the study's protocol. For example, in a drug study in which participants must check their blood glucose levels, they may need to be taught the correct technique.

As you may know, November is Diabetes Month and today is Diabetes Day, at least in New York City. The day kicks off in front of the United Nations, and even the Empire State Building will be bathed in blue light, the official diabetes color, to honor the occasion. As much as I love it that we now have our own month and day, I'm thinking: wouldn't it be nicer if we didn't need one?

When my seven-year-old son, Danny, was diagnosed with type 1diabetes, I had to take a serious look at his diet. He had always been our “picky” eater, and I had gone along with his demands to keep the peace. As a result, his favorite foods at the time of his diagnosis were pancakes with syrup, grilled cheese sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, cookies, juice, and the only vegetable he ate—cucumbers. These foods became the centerpiece of the meal plan constructed by the hospital nutritionist.

On August 16th, CytoTherapeutics Incorporated announced the commencement of its FDA-approved trial involving polymer-encapsulated islet cells. The trial is designed to establish that their semi-permeable membrane can allow enough nutrients through to keep the encapsulated cells alive while protecting them from destruction without the use of immunosuppressive drugs. The implant will be tested in people with type I and type 2 diabetes, as well as in a nondiabetic control group. The trial will be conducted at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and results of the 4 month viability study are expected by the end of 1993.
