Hi.  I broke my ankle in 3 places on July 19, 2007.  I then aquired an ankle and bone infection in Nov. 2007.  I then had agressive IV Antibiotic therapy.  Then in the summer of 2008 they made a special boot for me to wear.  I was still having problem with pain and being to walk without being stiff.  So it was decided that I would fuse my ankle using a fixater.  In Jan. 2009 we put the fixater on my ankle/leg.    Now it is 6 months later and I still have lots of pain - it is hard for me to do things because the fixater is painful and it makes it hard to walk and do anyting.

We will be doing another catscan to see how much it has healed.  If it has been only 20% I need to look at my options.  One option is have the ankle amputated.  So I am looking for someone in a similiar situation that has chosen to amputate - how is the quality of your life now.  I need honest answers, so I can look at all my options.  Help is there anyone out there?  Thanks.

I fractured my ankle in 2006, and had nine pins and two plates inserted to hold the bone together. Periodically I can't feel my foot if I lean on it to much. My orthopedic surgeon advised me ti do foot exercises (make the letters a thru z in lower case cursive with your foot once a day). In addition, take aqua therapy. Warm water does wonders for the entire body. If your on disability, most medicare plans pay for this service. In PA it's call Silver Sneakers.  The name is deceiving because I thought that you had to be 65. Silver Sneakers is for anyone on Medicare.
