Is there a Mediterranean diet adapted for people with type 2 diabetes?

Can you refer me to a book, website, or other generally available resource devoted to adaptation of the Mediterranean diet for use by people with type 2 diabetes? I'm looking for step-by-step instructions for instituting a "Mediterranean diabetic diet." Why? People with type 2 diabetes are prone to premature heart attacks, strokes, and dementia. The traditional Mediterranean diet is associated with lower rates of those diseases. The Mediterranean diet has already been associated with prevention of type 2 diabetes. I need resources for my patients. I'm finding that many dietitians are not terribly familiar with the concept. They know "diabetic diet" and "Mediterranean diet" but can't necessarily combine the two easily. It's a relatively new concept within the medical literature. For my purposes, it matters not whether the resource is free, nor whether the Mediterranean "diet" is used to lose excess weight or simply as "a habitual way of eating." Searching "mediterranean and diabetes" books at Amazon.com got me 170 hits, but nothing pertinent. Googling "Mediterranean diet and diabetes" got me 201,000 hits. I found nothing pertinent in the first 50 hits. Thanks for your help. -Steve

Diabetes diet Mediterranean is not an extraterrestrial diet. It contains all the foods recommended for one diabetic: fresh fruits and vegetables, rich in fibres and nutritional elements one should have. Source: http://www.all-about-beating-diabetes.com/diabetes-diet-Mediterranean.html

Thanks for your thoughts, taulandi. I posted the question over at the ADA website forums and haven't gotten anything defitinitive back yet. There was a mention of a book, "The Mediterranean Diet" by Cloutier and Adamson. My recollection from reading it five years ago was that diabetes was a minor part of the book. -Steve

Yes, there are two diet books that are based on the Mediterranean diet that are also supposed to be good for diabetes. One is the Sonoma Diet and the other is the Miami Mediterranean Diet. I am familiar with the Sonoma one, but have not looked at the Miami one. Two other books are the Mediterranean Prescription and The Mediterasian Way. The latter also has a website. eDiets also has a Mediterranean plan, but it is not specifically for Diabetes. I hope this helped some. If you need more info., just ask.

I should add that I do not think any of these books are specifically for diabetes, but are supposed to be good diets to prevent and control diabetes.

Thanks, boolkass.  I'm familiar with the Sonoma Diet - very good book on Mediterranean-style weight loss.  I'll have to pull it out of storage and review.  Read it about 3 years ago.  Like you, I've not see the Miami Mediterranean book yet.

I can't find my Sonoma diet book after a recent move.  According to Google Book Search ( I love this!), the Sonoma book has three mentions of diabetes in the index, and you can read all three of them.  Nothing comprehensive here for people with diabetes.

I'm exploring adaptation of the Mediterranean diet for people with diabetes at a blog I started in April.  Come have a look if interested:  http://diabeticmediterraneandiet.com.

After much research and analysis, I've composed version 1.0 of my Diabetic Mediterranean Diet, which is the world's first published low-carb Mediterranean diet. If interested, please visit: http://diabeticmediterraneandiet.com/diabetic-mediterranean-diet/ -Steve
