Congratulations on the news of bringing a baby into your life. May God Bless and keep you. I have been a type 1 Diabetic for 38 years. My Drs. advised me not to get pregnant because of the diabetes. However I have been pregnant 4 times and I have 4 beautiful, wonderful blessings to share my life with. During your pregnancy it is imperative that you test your BS more frequently, probably every 3-4 hours. The baby will be taking alot of the nutrients and carbs that are necessary for growing and development. You will most likely need to increase your caloric intake, not only for the baby, but to prevent your BS from dropping to low. If you are unsure of how to treat your high blood sugars, contact your Dr.. You will usually have to take a fast acting or short term insulin. You and your Dr. will decide how much 1 unit of insulin will lower your BS. This depends on what type of insulin that you are using, as each insulin works differently with each diabetic. While I was pregnant, I would take whatever my high BS was and subtract my target BS. The remaining amount was divided by the amount that 1 unit of insulin will lower the BS. The result would be the amount of fast acting insulin to take. This amount must be determined by your Dr. and or your Diabetic Educator. Do noy try to figure this out on your own. Once you take the insulin to correct your high BS, you will need to retest your BS in 1-2 hours to determine how effective this was. Your obgyn should be someone who specializes in high risk or diabetic pregnancies. You will most likely have more ultrasounds and stress tests to see how the baby is progressing. It may seem like alot of work, however the payoff is sooo.. rewarding. I have had 4 pregnancies and have given birth to 4 healthy, perfect babies. Good Luck. Make it a great day. Jody

Is it likely that in an early stage of pregnancy your sugar levels will run low because mine seem to be very low lately and i have a few pregnancy symptoms also.
