On July 1st,1991, San Francisco introduced a pilot program, initiated by Scott King, Editor in Chief of DIABETES HEALTH, to help reduce the risk of city garbage collectors getting stuck by syringe needles.
People with diabetes are now able to dispose of used syringes in special containers and drop them off at convenient locations free of charge. City health officials have high hopes that the program will reduce the medical waste in the city's waste stream and prevent environmental damage from unsafe disposal methods.
Lynne Lieber, Executive Director of the American Diabetes Association, recently stated that the ADA is "proud to be a part of this collaborative project and hopes that people with diabetes will make use of the program."
