A study conducted by a joint research group from the University of Melbourne and Deakin University in Australia has found that low-carbohydrate diets that are high in fat content can have a negative effect on blood glucose control in people with Type I diabetes. The report on the study was published in the November 1992 issue of Diabetes Care.
In their study, the researchers used two low-carbohydrate diets with different fat levels. The high-fat diet, when compared to the low-fat diet, caused a significant elevation in blood glucose. In addition to its negative effect on glycemic control, the high-fat diet also caused a significant rise in cholesterol levels.
The researchers indicate in the report that the results of their study further support the conclusion that carbohydrates may not be the most critical factors in determining glycemic control in Type I diabetes.
