According to a recent study from Sudan, the largest state on the African continent, there has been an increase in the incidence of childhood Type I diabetes. The study was conducted in Khartoum city by a joint research group from University Hospital in Khartoum, and University Hospital in Uppsala, Sweden. Their report was published in the November 1992 issue of Diabetes Care.
The results of the study found that the incidence of Type I diabetes in children living in Khartoum who were below the age of 15 had increased by 71% between 1987 and 1990. This figure rates higher than those taken during the same time in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Poland, and is similar to figures reported from Italy and France. Peak incidence of Type I diabetes in both boys and girls was found to be between the ages of 10 and 14.
