Type 1 Diabetes and Low Blood Sugar
Researchers from the Diabetes Research Institute in Düsseldorf, Germany, have concluded that impaired consciousness brought on by hypoglycemia is reduced in well-controlled type I diabetes patients when compared to patients with poor control.
Hypoglycemia was induced in subjects with type I diabetes by intravenous insulin injection. The sample group was divided into patients with well-controlled diabetes and poorly-controlled diabetes.
Subjective symptoms of hypoglycemia were first observed when blood glucose was lowered to approximately 46.5 mg/dl in poorly controlled patients and approximately 31.6 mg/dl in well-controlled patients.
