The results of a study conducted by researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, suggest a possible relationship between poor blood glucose control and dental caries (tooth destruction) in children with type I diabetes. The report of the study was published in Pediatr Dent, May-June 1992.
Dental caries was observed in 28 children with newly diagnosed type I diabetes and recorded up to two years after the onset of their disease. During the observation period, 46% of the children developed dental caries, with a higher incidence during the first year of diabetes than in the second.
Children with active tooth destruction displayed a significantly higher long-term average blood glucose level than those whose teeth were normal.
