Hadassah University Hospital, Jerusalem
Researchers at Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem have reported evidence that diabetes may lead to ascorbic acid (vitamin C) deficiency.
The study, published in Nutrition Research Newsletter, v 11, October 1992, shows a direct relationship between glycemic control and levels of plasma ascorbic acid. Patients that measured low in glycemic control had lower levels of plasma ascorbic acid.
The researchers speculate that high levels of blood glucose interfere with ascorbic acid.
