Rate of Nephropathy Among People with IDDM has Decreased
According to a report from the University Hospital in Linkoping, Sweden, the incidence of nephropathy has decreased dramatically. The report is based on a study of 213 people with type I diabetes, who had been diagnosed before the age of 15 between 1961 and 1980.
The rate of nephropathy, as measured by albuminuria levels, has decreased from 30% among people diagnosed between 1961 to 1965 to 8.9% among those who were diagnosed between 1966 to 1970. Persistent albuminuria has yet to be found in any of the people studied who were diagnosed later than 1976. These dramatic results are believed to be the result of better glucose control.
