High Blood Sugars Increase Chance Of Miscarriage
High blood sugar
In a recent study published in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Oct. 1994) it was found that women with type I diabetes have an increased risk of miscarriage or having infants with birth defects.
Of the 215 women with type I diabetes that were enrolled in the study before the 9th week of pregnancy 52 of them had miscarriages, while 6 percent of the women enrolled before the 14th week had infants with major congenital malformations.
The study found that a median pre-meal glucose level of 120-130 mg/dL or an initial glycohemoglobin concentration of 12-13 percent increased the risks to the mother and fetus.
Below these levels the risks are the same as for women who do not have diabetes.
