A more dilute glucose solution was used by the University of Texas Health Science Center ant San Antonio to screen women for gestational diabetes, and the results seem promising for women who dread taking the test.
A total of 132 pregnant women underwent a standard 1 hour glucose screening test (50 grams of glucose in 150 ml of solution), the modified 1 hour glucose screening test (50 grams of glucose in 450 ml of solution), and a three hour glucose tolerance test (100 grams of glucose with hourly blood sugar tests for three hours).
The study found that the modified test caused less nausea and vomiting, and a higher glucose and insulin level 30 minutes after ingestion suggesting faster absorption.
The study found no difference in the one hour glucose values between the groups, which led the researchers to conclude that a more dilute and palatable solution can be used to screen for gestational diabetes without causing discomfort to the women or compromising the test results. The results of the study were published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, September, 1994.
