Thirty-five children, ages 9-13, with diabetes of varying severity were studied in Russia to observe their ability to metabolize vitamins.
A decrease in riboflavin metabolism, recognizable by an increase in the vitamin's excretion in urine, was found in many of the children, and was more common in the children who had a longer duration of diabetes.
Deficiencies in vitamins B1, B6, and C were observed in all of the children, but more so in the children who had elevated cholesterol levels.
The ability to metabolize the vitamins was sometimes related to glycemic control. The results were published in the Russian medical journal, Voprosy Meditsinskoi Khimi July/August 1994.
