Diabetes Makes You 5 Times More Likely To Have A Heart Attack

Take Care Of Your Heart

Did you know heart disease is the leading cause of death for people with diabetes?

Pamela J. Mahaffey, RN, of Worthington, Ohio, recently produced a research report in which she lists factors that contribute to heart disease. By eliminating as many risks as possible, people with diabetes can lower their odds of developing heart problems.

Risks include:

  • Family history/genetics
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • "Type A" behavior
  • Stress

The more factors that are present, the greater the risk of heart disease. Because diabetes alone makes people two to five times more likely to have a heart attack, it is important to cut other risk factors as much as possible.

This research was presented at the 22nd Annual Meeting and Educational Program of the AADE in Boston, August 1995.
