Two years ago Julie Farabee's four-year-old daughter was diagnosed with diabetes. Farabee not only had to deal with the worry and fear of having a chronically ill child, she had to suffer in what seemed like solitude.
She joined one group in her area but found that it consisted mostly of three or four parents who sat around and told horror stories about their kids. Because the group was all Farabee had, she kept going until it just "fizzled out."
Frustrated, Farabee started her own support group, one that provides a positive and upbeat influence for many families. The East Bay Support Group is modeled after family diabetes camps and is focused on getting people who are touched by the disease together on a regular basis.
The group is supported by Kaiser of Walnut Creek and is both educational and social. Four times a year the families get together just for fun. Potlucks, pizza nights, and hiking are just some of the activities enjoyed by participants.
Most of the kids involved in the East Bay Support Group are age 13 and under, since there is also a teen support group in the area.
The group produces a newsletter that serves Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco counties. For more information or to get on the newsletter mailing list, call Julie Farabee at (510) 944-9870.
