When people think of New Orleans, the first thing that comes to mind may be Mardi Gras or red-hot jambalaya. Faye Dyer Englade has made it her job to change people's perceptions of New Orleans-within the diabetes community at least-through the Lakeview Diabetes Wellness Program.
Englade has lead the program for over five years and since October 1995, has expanded the program to include support groups in the Bogalusa and Slidell Areas.
The groups, consisting of anywhere between five and 40 members, meet once a month for an hour or more. Englade stresses the group's casual atmosphere.
Says Englade, "We meet for at least an hour, but if people want to extend the conversation, they're welcome. Not everyone comes every time. Some people say, 'Just seeing it advertised in the paper helps me.'"
Englade, a nurse practioner for 19 years, has also had diabetes for 27 years. If her success continues, Diabetes Support Groups around Louisiana may become more popular than catfish sandwiches.
The programs are free and open to the public. For information on the Lakeview Diabetes Wellness Program, call Faye Dyer Englade at (800) 933-9632.
