I've just returned from the big diabetes conference in New Orleans. It was a gathering of over 2,000 diabetes educators and companies representing products and services relating to diabetes. We had a booth in the exhibit hall along with hundreds of other companies. Three of us from Diabetes Health attended the show to shake hands with diabetes educators and meet with advertisers, and I also attended some of the lectures.
At this year's conference, I was reminded of how far we've come since we published the first issue of Diabetes Health in 1991. I remember arriving at my first diabetes conference in Washington, D.C. I was alone and nervous. I had brought boxes of Diabetes Health to distribute, but I wasn't quite sure how I'd accomplish my task, plus I didn't know a soul at the conference. I carefully set my stacks of Diabetes Health next to the entrances of the convention center, and went inside to introduce the paper and myself to the exhibitors at their various company booths. Much to my shock and surprise, when I turned around all of the stacks of papers I had left were being hauled off by the custodial crew to be thrown in a trash can. At the time, I didn't even realize that in order to distribute the paper at the conference I'd needed to get permission first!
Needless to say, we have come a long way. Five years later, I feel like I've become part of the diabetes community and thankfully, the name Diabetes Health is now recognized both nationally and internationally by medical professionals, educators and people with diabetes.
As I passed by a company booth at the conference in New Orleans, I noticed a big stack of photocopies of a page taken out of our newspaper, highlighting an article which we had published about their new injection aid.
If you would like to distribute multiple copies of something you read in Diabetes Health, please let us know so we can give you proper copyright permission. In most cases reprinting articles is free. All that we require is that you call and notify us, and then we'll send you information which contains our logo and 800 number to affix to the articles. We can also supply artwork if required.
Also, Diabetes Health is always happy to send extra copies of the paper and subscriber information to support groups and conferences-just call or write us and we will send you extra copies with the proper copyright tags inscribed. This process usually takes two weeks to a month.
I was pleased to get so much positive feedback at the AADE conference in New Orleans. It seems that we are going in the right direction, and in the coming months I hope to make Diabetes Health an even stronger presence in the diabetes community.
