Shows How to Obtain Good Care in the
Steven Edelman, MD
Interested in learning more about how to control your diabetes? Steven Edelman, MD, associate professor of medicine at the University of California at San Diego, is directing a series of conferences specifically designed for people with diabetes.
Titled Taking Control of Your Diabetes, they focus on education and motivation for better control. According to Dr. Edelman, the conferences have two major goals: "How to make a positive impact by preventing and delaying diabetes complications, and how to obtain the care needed for optimal health in the age of HMOs."
Started in 1995 - five have already taken place - the first conference in 1997 will be at the Moscone Center in San Francisco on April 19. Dr. Nancy Bohannon and Dr. David Price, both specialists in diabetes, will give talks. The sessions will include seminars on food and nutrition, new drugs for treating type 2 diabetes, the emotional aspects of diabetes and how to get maximum care in a managed care environment.
The opportunity to meet with diabetes experts individually, or in small groups, for nutritional counseling and interpreting home blood glucose monitoring results will be offered. A product fair with dozens of booths demonstrating diabetes-related products will also be included.
After San Francisco, there will be four more conferences: Seattle, on May 31; Indianapolis on June 28; San Diego on October 25; and Dallas on November 22, 1997.
