New Test May One Day Detect Approaching Heart Disease
A new indicator of atherosclerosis for people with type 2 diabetes has been discovered. French scientists have found that the levels of a blood protein called A-IV is a very strong indicator of arterial problems in the heart, limbs and brain.
The study, published in the January issue of Diabetes, found that 22 percent of people with type 2 diabetes who had normal A-IV levels had macrovascular disease, while 67.8 percent of those with A-IV levels "above the upper limit of the normal range" had macrovascular disease.
Earlier and more accurate predictions of approaching heart disease would be a great diagnostic advance.
