In a Nutshell: The ABCs of diabetes. This is a good quick reference guide for anyone with diabetes. The pages are earmarked in the corner with either type I, type 2 or both types, so that the reader can thumb through quickly to the appropriate pages.
The drawback is that the book can be rather simplistic for people with more complicated questions. The book is formatted in an easy question and answer style; however, each answer is restricted to one short page.
The book covers such questions as "What can I take for a cough caused by my ACE inhibitor medication?" and, "Will ginseng help me to control my blood sugar?" to name just a few.

In a Nutshell: Biermann & Toohey are back again, this time focusing on women and diabetes. This book has a warm, conversational tone to it. Biermann & Toohey quiz Dr. Lois Jovanovic-Peterson - a renowned endocrinologist and a person with type I diabetes - regarding women with diabetes.
The Diabetic Woman begins with basic questions such as What is diabetes? and What are the differences between type I and type 2? It then progresses into more complicated psychosocial issues like self image and relationships. This book is accessible and easy to read, plus it focuses on women of all ages - from childhood to post-menopausal.
The chapter "Diabetic Diet a la Carte," which deals with weight issues, self image and nutrition, is especially helpful.
A Diabetic Doctor Looks At Diabetes: His and Yours

In a Nutshell: This book presents an upbeat, positive approach to diabetes care for type Is and IIs. Dr. Lodewick has type I diabetes, and he discusses his own experiences as well as those of his patients.
Dr. Lodewick covers all the bases from insulin therapy to low-carbohydrate diets. This is a good read for anyone who has been newly diagnosed. Personal profiles and inspiring quotes from such luminaries as Plato and John Locke pepper the book.
Especially helpful is the chapter on oral medications for type 2s, which addresses issues such as who should take them, their duration of effect and typical dosage amounts.
Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solutions

In a Nutshell: Dr. Bernstein, a person with type I diabetes and one of the pioneers of diabetes care, is back with his third book - a comprehensive guide to normalizing blood sugars.
This book details Dr. Bernstein's controversial high-protein, low- carbohydrate diet and gives many low-carbohydrate recipes like Chocolate Vanilla Cheesecake and Chicken Dijon.
Diabetes Solutions is a great book for those who are actively involved in their diabetes care and frustrated with mainstream approaches. This book covers many topics from the basics of self-injection to gastroparesis.
Dr. Bernstein devotes several chapters to insulin and different insulin regimens which are especially effective.
How to Get Great Diabetes Care

In a Nutshell: Dr. Hirsch functions as a medical Ralph Nader, guiding his readers toward better care for their buck.
Each chapter reviews one of the major topics from the ADA's "Standards of Medical Care" - blood glucose control, continuing care and nephropathy are all included. The book is designed so that readers will have enough information to make informed decisions with their doctors about their diabetes care.
Especially helpful are the boxes at the end of each chapter. Each contains a series of questions the reader can ask his/her doctor.
Women & Diabetes

In a Nutshell: Women & Diabetes has a decidedly new age slant to it, giving spiritual quotes throughout each chapter. Using case studies of women of all ages and their collective knowledge of diabetes care, Laurinda M. Poirier and Katharine M. Coburn tackle the difficulties of day-to-day diabetes management for women.
Poirier and Coburn offer various graphs, questionnaires and exercises designed to make the reader do some soul searching. "Life Stages," "Diagrams of Healthful Change" and "Listening to Your Body" are just a few of the exercises sprinkled throughout the book.
Especially helpful is the chapter devoted to building support networks. This chapter focuses on developing new patterns of emotional support through communication, negotiation and socialization.
