Hold the Bologna
Researchers found that a protein-enriched snack only adds calories and does not prolong protection against low blood sugars. The Endocrine Research Unit, in Rochester, Minnesota, conducted a study to determine whether the treatment of hypoglycemia with a snack containing both protein and carbohydrate results in more prolonged protection against low blood sugars than a snack containing only carbohydrates. The research findings were published in the April 1996 issue of Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Shareholders Unite Against Biocontrol
A rash of lawsuits filed by angry shareholders against Biocontrol last year have been certified and consolidated as a class action suit by the U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh. The shareholders' suits were filed after the FDA advisory panel deemed the Diasensor 1000 non-invasive meter to be ineffective.
Phase II Trial for Insulin Sensitizer
Targretin, an oral medication under development by Ligand Pharmaceuticals Inc. for people with type 2 diabetes, has recently undergone phase II clinical trials. In preclinical studies, Targretin enabled diabetic mice to use insulin more effectively and also resulted in a 40 percent glucose reduction, 20 percent insulin reduction and 30 percent reduction in triglyceride levels.
Complications Progress Quicker in the Elderly
A University of California at San Francisco study found that complications resulting from high blood sugars will progress more rapidly in older people with type 2 diabetes than in younger people with type 2.
Balance PC Hits the Shelves
Balance PC Diabetes Software (see DIABETES HEALTH, March 1997) will be available in Osco and Sav-On Diabetes Care pharmacies. The software will now be sold either off the shelf or by special order.
Insulin Syringes Get Design Overhaul
Terumo Medical Corporation is selling a new line of insulin syringes called Sure-Dose. According to the company, scale markings and plunger movement have been improved. Also, a tapered hub at the plunger tip eliminates dead space, lessening the chance of air bubbles.
