New research shows that mexiletine, long used for cardiac arrhythmia, can help reduce the pain associated with diabetic neuropathy.
It has been known for some time that tight glycemic control can lessen the pain, and reverse other manifestations of diabetic neuropathy. But aside from this option, managing painful diabetic neuropathy has been difficult. Traditional pain-relieving therapy is rarely effective, and evaluating different therapeutic options is complicated by a lack of objective measurements.
However, the current work of Per Oskarsson, MD, Jan-Gustaf Ljunggren, MD, PhD, et al. published in October's Diabetes Care, shows that patients had decreased nighttime pain and less disturbed sleep after taking 675 mg of mexiletine per day.
