An Argument for Estrogen

Feb 1, 1998

According to a recent study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, estrogen therapy protects against cardiovascular disease, decreases glucose levels and improves HbA1cs in postmenopausal woman with diabetes .

Researchers conclude that there is enough evidence to support giving estrogen therapy to women with diabetes because they can gain protection against cardiovascular disease.

Estrogen therapy might also help prevent type 2 diabetes because it lowers the elevated insulin levels often seen in postmenopausal women. Further studies are being conducted based on evidence that postmenopausal women on estrogen therapy developed diabetes less often than those who were not.
