A Day of Hope for Diabetes

| Mar 1, 1998

On March 21st, over 1,500 people are expected to gather in Palm Springs, Calif., for an extraordinary diabetes conference where a top line-up of nationally renowned speakers will discuss the latest developments in diabetes.

The featured guest speaker of the 3rd annual "A Day of Hope" hosted by the Desert Diabetes Club will be Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD, director of the Islet Transplantation Center at St. Vincent Medical Center in Los Angeles and director of VivoRx, Inc.

Soon-Shiong is a pioneer of the islet cell transplantation process, which involves the injection of insulin-producing cells into the body. Soon-Shiong was recently featured on Peter Jennings' "World News Tonight" discussing this process.

Steven Craig, Soon-Shiong's first patient to receive a encapsulated islet cell transplant, will also speak at the event. Mr. Craig now reportedly enjoys a life virtually free of insulin injections.

Other presenters at the event will be:

Aaron Vinik, MD, PhD, Director, Diabetes Research Institute, Norfolk, Virginia will present "Successful Treatment for Diabetic Neuropathy." Vinik is one of the world's leading authorities on diabetic neuropathy.

Russell Potts, PhD, executive director of research of Cygnus, Inc., will present a lecture titled "Non-Invasive Blood Testing," and discuss his new product the GlucoWatch (a continuous BG monitoring device which is worn like a wristwatch).

Hosting "A Day of Hope" will be endocrinologist John J. Deller, MD, Desert Diabetes Club president emeritus James Cook and the Club's current president, Ted Saltzman. Before and after the presentations, there will be a product fair in the lobby of the Annenberg Center.

The conference will take place on Saturday the 21st, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences at Eisenhower Medical Center. For more information, contact the Desert Diabetes Club at Eisenhower at (760) 773-1578 or (760) 773-1403.
