Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston compared the blood flow in the forearm of ten patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus with that of similar age patients with normal blood glucose. Vitamin C was then administered to both groups. Patients with diabetes showed a marked increase in the dilation of the cells which line blood vessels after receiving vitamin C. No change was noted in the control group.
The researchers believe that these findings indicate a link between nitric oxide, a gas normally produced in the body, free radicals and abnormal circulation found in type 1 diabetes. (Journal of the American College of Cardiology 1998;31:552-7.)
