Painless Meter on the Horizon
Amira Medical, formerly Mercury Diagnostics, is close to releasing its At Last Blood Glucose Monitoring System, which promises to offer a pain-free method for sampling and monitoring blood glucose.
The system includes both a lancing and metering device combined into a single unit, which can draw blood from areas such as the forearm, hand, or thigh. Unlike finger tips, these areas are not dense with sensitive nerve endings, and can thus be lanced with little or no pain.
The Amira unit relies on a plunger-like mechanism attached to the meter, which gently puckers the skin and simultaneously lances and draws a blood sample (3 µl.). The automated test strip within the plunger then draws the sample directly into the meter, which produces a reading within 15 seconds.
Amira is currently waiting for clearance from the Food and Drug Administration to begin marketing the meter.Click Here To View Or Post Comments
