Herbal Fiber Controls Glucose
Fenugreek leaves
For centuries Middle Eastern cultures have been using the herb fenugreek to treat obesity. Nutricept, Inc. has applied this ancient knowledge to diabetes care, creating a new form of fenugreek in its product Limitrol. Limitrol is a dietary fiber supplement which can be taken as a capsule or a pudding.
In its natural form fenugreek has an offensive taste and odor, which discourages people from using it. Limitrol uses an odorless and tasteless form of fenugreek which was developed by Michael Osband, MD, of the Boston University School of Medicine.
A study from Hyderabad in 1990 shows that fenugreek reduced urinary glucose excretion in people with type 2 diabetes. Studies also link fenugreek with lowering cholesterol and calorie absorption after meals. The book Natural Medicine for Diabetes warns that fenugreek can cause uterine contractions in pregnant women. David Radunsky, president of Nutricept, says that they do not have research on Limitrol and pregnancy, but that pregnant women should "assume this is true about our product, too."
