Individuals on insulin therapy (above 70 years in age) demonstrated better metabolic control than the group using the drug treatment (HbA1c fell from 9.3 to 7.3 in the insulin group while the drug group HbA1c rose from 9.1 to 9.3). " Insulin therapy is safe in the elderly," wrote the researchers. "It reverses symptoms of hyperglycemia without increasing the symptoms of hypoglycemia in the long run."
Nevertheless, this improvement did not result in improvements in patient perceptions of their own well-being and quality of life (which was measured using a questionnaire). The researchers were unsure of the reasons for these perceptions, but noted that type 2s generally have a lower perception of health and more age-related symptoms in general. They also often have more complications of their disease and "may find it difficult to experience improvement when metabolic control improves."
