Desmos and UCLA Collaborate on Islet Program
Desmos Inc. has announced that it will continue to collaborate with Dr. Yoko Mullen at the University of California, Los Angeles, to support the development of its islet technology.
Desmos is a company which develops products to treat human disease, including diabetes.
The collaboration is directed at conducting tests using pig cells and applying them to human cells. The objective of the research is to develop insulin-producing cells for transplantation into people with diabetes. The technology involves the use of an extracellular protein mold called laminin-5. This will act as a substrate for the growth of pancreatic islet cells.
"We know that human islet cell transplantation offers the possibilities of a major therapeutic step forward," stated Richard Haiduck, president and CEO of Desmos. "Our work with Dr. Mullen is an important step in that process."
