New Kidney Test Makes Things Easier
Bayer Inc. has developed a new test which simplifies screenings for kidney disease, and could potentially save the lives of many people with diabetes. Kidney disease leads to other illnesses and dependence on kidney dialysis.
Dr. Sheldon Tobe, a kidney specialist at the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre in Toronto, reports that "diabetic kidney disease is the leading cause of renal failure in the Western world."
CLINITEK tests the urine for levels of the protein albumin. Doctors know that high percentages of albumin place a person at risk for kidney disease, which could later lead to chronic illness and kidney dialysis.
Up until now, when a patient tested for albumin, he or she had to produce urine samples for an entire 24-hour period. CLINITEK, with its newly developed test strip, requires only one sample at any time of day. CLINITEK's results develop in one minute.
"If microalbuminaria can be detected early, lifestyle changes and the use of medications may reverse or slow down the progression to kidney disease in these patients," says Dr. Tobe.
According to the World Health Organization, patients with diabetes should have their albumin checked once a year, starting at age 12.
