The Food And Drug Administration has given marketing clearance for a special laser finger perforator for kids.
The clearance gives Cell Robotics International, Inc. of Albuquerque, N.M., the go-ahead to market its Lasette laser finger perforator. The new device would be used for collecting capillary blood samples from patients (ages 5 and older) for blood glucose testing.
The product is the first of its kind for young people with diabetes.
In clinical studies conducted by Cell Robotics, a majority of the children who participated in using the Lasette reported feeling no pain whatsoever. Some children even gave the Lasette the ultimate seal of approval by calling it "cool."
Additional data from a home-use clinical trial has been submitted to the FDA requesting clearance for home-usage of the Lasette.
"Our strongest demand for the Lasette has come from pediatric health care professionals and parents of children with diabetes," stated Travis Lee, vice-president of sales and marketing for Cell Robotics. "They want to improve their children's lives by reducing the trauma of daily multiple fingersticks with a lancet."
Cell Robotics develops, manufactures and markets additional medical and research laser devices. For more information, check out their web site at http: //www.cellrobotics.com/cell, or call (505) 343-1131.
