If you wish to complain about the shortage of beef-pork insulin, file a shortage complaint using the Medwatch Form 3500 discussed below. You may also wish to appeal to Congress (the FDA's boss).
Write to:
The Honorable (Representative's Full Name)
United States House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515
To find out your representative's name, as well as additional contact information, call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. You can also request to be connected to his or her office at that time if you wish to register a concern by phone. Keep your comments short and to the point. Beef-pork insulin is a medical necessity for you or your loved one.
If You Do Switch And Suffer
Those who switch to human or pork insulin and suffer a bad experience with either formulation should call the FDA MedWatch office at (800) 532-4400. Select option #4, then #7 to request FDA Form 3500. You may also report your concerns regarding the shortage of beef insulins on Form 3500. The form can be downloaded from the FDA website at: http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/report/consumer/consumer.htm .
Be sure to fill out a separate report for each adverse event, especially life-threatening situations (like hypoglycemia) that require hospitalization or the assistance of others. You may also report your concerns regarding the shortage of beef source insulins on Form 3500. This will ensure that your complaints of the beef or beef-pork shortage are registered.
