ADA Pressures Politicians to Keep Promises on Diabetes Funding
They can't agree about much, but they do agree on one thing: a cure for diabetes. But will they put their money where their mouths are?
Politicians' words have not translated into big NIH money in the past. Steve Smith, the ADA's chairman of government relations, says that "just 2.5 percent of the government's medical research budget is spent trying to cure diabetes."
The ADA reports that a majority of those elected to Congress this November have declared their support to increase funding for a diabetes cure. If these officials follow through with more money and a cure is found, says the ADA, Congress could save the $40 billion per year it currently spends on treating people with diabetes.
Smith expresses the wishes of people with diabetes, saying, "We hope this strong bipartisan congressional support signals a turning point and acts as a catalyst to encourage the NIH to become far more aggressive in fighting a disease that, according to the Centers for Disease Control, 'has become the epidemic of our time.'"
