The photographer for our injection technique photo essay is Greg Bailey of San Francisco.
Lloyd, 38, is a bartender in San Francisco. Not a sit down, have a cigarette and a drink, tell me your troubles type of bartender, but the have a $5 drink with your tofu and spinach salad kind. Lloyd is a bartender at the famous vegetarian restaurant Greens, where people flock to get some of the best, and most expensive, vegetarian meals around. Although he is not a vegetarian, Lloyd says his health definitely benefits from working at a place where he can eat like a vegetarian king.
Lloyd wasn't always this concerned about his health. He was diagnosed at age 13, and quickly doctors told him he would have to start keeping track of everything he ate, every urine test, every shot, practically every move he made.
"That's the last thing a teenage boy is gonna do," he jokes.
From his teen years into adulthood, his diabetes control was okay but a few years ago he started to gain a little weight from too much insulin. To lose the weight, he knew he would have to exercise more often, so he started the martial art, Aikido. He loved it and his control greatly improved, leading him to more activities, like hiking and hunting.
"When I was a kid I didn't care about diabetes, because I didn't think I'd ever get complications," he says. As he got older, he realized that exercise is important to avoid complications.
He is still learning how to work the exercise into his routine and does experience lows, but he has now lost weight and feels great. As you can see, he wears his maturity and experience well.
