Fish oil helps lower triglycerides, but does not interfere with diabetes control. High levels of triglycerides might be harmful to people with diabetes.
Victor M. Montori and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic presented their findings at the American Diabetes Association's scientific sessions in June. The researchers analyzed 18 trials of fish oil supplements in people with type 2 diabetes. Patients received anywhere from 1.7 to 10 grams of fish oil per day, and triglycerides were lowered an average of 50 mg/dl.
Fish oil can be found in vitamin and health food stores.
