New Nutrition Bar Prevents Lows—Uncooked Cornstarch Keeps BGs Up

Another bedtime nutrition bar for people with diabetes came on the market in June. The Extend Bar is a long-acting carbohydrate snack that lasts for up to nine hours, and helps prevent episodes of hypoglycemia.

Extend Bar was created by Francine Kaufman, MD, an endocrinologist and researcher at Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles. It is a combination of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, says Brian Dwyer, the business manager for Extend Bar. The carbohydrates, rice flower and uncooked cornstarch, are released into the blood stream at different rates. While the rice flour enters the blood stream quickly, the corn starch enters slowly, allowing the body to slowly absorb sugar.

The results of Kaufman's clinical study on the bar show that it reduced episodes of hypoglycemia by up to 75 percent.

"Extend Bar should become an adjunct to the overall diabetic regimen," Kaufman says.

The Extend Bar, which is cholesterol-free, counts as two starch or carbohydrate exchanges. It is sweetened with fructose and Maltitol and comes in two flavors, Peanut Butter Crunch and Chocolate Chip Crunch.

"The Extend Bar is a cross between a rice crispy bar and a granola bar," Dwyer says.

According to Dwyer, a carton of four bars costs $5.99. The cartons are only available by mail order from Health Script, based in Colorado. However, the Extend Bar company is working to get the bar sold in stores.
