Pharmacy Profession Ranks Isolation of Insulin as a Major 20th Century Event
In the October issue of Drug Topic magazine, the isolation of insulin was ranked as one of the top five events in the pharmacy profession for the 20th century.
According to Gregory J. Higby, PhD, director of the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy, the isolation of insulin in 1921 "provided pharmacists with a product to sell that prolonged and improved the quality of life for millions of people." Higby adds that the isolation of insulin also "provided a major incentive to the pharmaceutical industry by demonstrating what research could produce, inspiring additional research."
