Soon after insulin was discovered, Leonard F. C. Wendt, MD, opened the first diabetes camp in Michigan. Since 1925, many more have opened across the nation.
Today, an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 young people attend diabetes camps each summer. Summer camps provide young people, ages 6 to 18, an opportunity to effectively manage their diabetes in an environment that is educational, safe and fun.
Through the help of Zula Walters, executive director for the Diabetes Camping Association (DCA), DIABETES HEALTH has compiled a sampling of some diabetes summer camps. To locate a camp in your area, contact the DCA at cshzula@juno.com.
