New Protein Product May Benefit People at Risk for Kidney Disease
Quintessence, a proprietary formulation of essential amino acids, may be used to supplement protein needs for patients with kidney failure who require a low-protein diet. In addition, Quintessence, manufactured by Calwood Nutritionals of Baltimore, can be used to enhance nutritional status in people with a normal protein intake.
Approximately 350,000 people each year undergo dialysis for kidney disease. Oftentimes, people with diabetes have elevated levels of protein in their urine. If left untreated, this could lead to kidney disease and eventually require dialysis.
"As many as 15 million people are unaware that they have elevated levels of protein in the urine," says William F. Keane, vice president of the National Kidney Foundation.
According to the January 1999 issue of the Journal of American Society of Nephrologists, a low-protein diet supplemented with essential amino acids has postponed the necessity of beginning dialysis for one to four years. In addition, researchers have found that essential amino acids may reduce kidney disease.
