House Passes Resolution to Help Kids—Organ Transplant Research to Go Forward

On April 4, the U.S House of Representatives passed, by a 410-0 margin, House Resolution (HR) 4008, the Pediatric Organ Transplantation Improvement Act of 2000. Congressional Diabetes Caucus cochair Diana DeGette, D-Colo., introduced the measure.

HR 4008 will be incorporated into HR 2418, the Organ Procurement Transplantation Network Amendments of 1999. Co-sponsored by John Peterson, R-Penn, HR 4008 recognizes children's unique health needs surrounding transplantation and research.

The bill addresses the following:

  • the cost and coverage of immunosuppressive drugs (anti-rejection medications) for children undergoing transplantation
  • balancing the retrieval of organs while protecting the needs of criminal investigations that may delay or prevent organ retrieval
  • problems related to child growth and development with respect to pre- and post- organ transplantation
  • commissioned studies by the organ transplantation network addressing procurement and allocation
