Trial Shows it Has Anti-inflammatory and Metabolic Effects
High doses of vitamin E are shown to be anti-inflammatory as well as useful in reducing plaque formation in type 2 diabetes. Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, administered a daily dose of 1200 IU of vitamin E (natural alpha-tocopherol) per day to 75 subjects in a clinical trial lasting three months.
The July 11 issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association reports that Drs. Ishwarlal Jialal and Sridevi Devaraj studied 25 subjects with type 2 diabetes who had no vascular complications and 25 subjects with type 2 diabetes who had macrovascular complications. In addition, there were 25 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.
An antioxidant effect was evident in all subjects. In addition, tests showed that vitamin E in high doses is an anti-inflammatory agent.
Drs. Jialal and Devaraj conclude that use of vitamin E as an adjunctive therapy in diabetes would reduce cardiovascular events. A larger clinical trial is being planned.
There is also speculation that vitamin E might have an effect on the metabolic syndrome that causes diabetes, and therefore might act to prevent the disease.
