Dear DIABETES HEALTH,
While interning at the Illinois Department of Public Health this summer, I was given a copy of your publication. I was very impressed with what I saw. Somehow you seemed to strike that delicate balance between the "hard facts of life" and the eternal optimism you must need in order to deal with diabetes on a daily basis. Keep up the good work.
Dear DIABETES HEALTH,
I read Beverly Mack's column, "A Slice of Life," published in your summer issue of DIABETES HEALTH. The detailed explanation of carbohydrate, protein and fat was well written, but I take issue with two statements she made. First, I disagree with Ms. Mack when she says that exchange systems do not work. Having lived with insulin dependent diabetes for 33 years, I have found that exchange systems work well in promoting consistency...which in turn helps to alleviate some of the blood glucose fluctuations inherent in IDDM. Second, I disagree with Ms. Mack's argument that if blood sugar is elevated, it is inappropriate to eat fruit and necessary to cut back on starches. It has been my personal and professional experience that if a person cuts back on starch and does not eat fruit, they are likely to experience a hypoglycemic reaction later in the day.
I feel that we as professionals and Diabetes Educators must be careful to give individualized instructions to people, not blanket statements or opinions of what has worked for us personally.

Dear Catfish Hunter,
I read your interview with Scott King in the summer issue of DIABETES HEALTH. I found out I had diabetes like you did. My baseball coaches were getting fed up because I had to go to the bathroom so often. I also had lost a lot of weight. I am now 11 years and am interested in finding out more about you.
