In a December 19, 2000 interview with Reuters Health, Behle said maternal HbA1c levels can predict risk of cardiac abnormality in fetuses. According to a study presented by Behle at the 5th Latin American Congress in Perinatology in Rio de Janeiro, women who had fetuses with cardiac abnormalities had on average an HbA1c level of 10.2%.
On the other hand, diabetic women who had fetuses without cardiac abnormality had on average an HbA1c level of 5.6%.
