Anonymous Donation is Second Largest in John Hopkins History
January 31, Johns Hopkins University announced it had received a $58.5 million donation that will go toward the advancement of stem-cell research.
The anonymous donation, the second largest in the University's history according to Dennis O'Shea, the school's executive director of public affairs, will be spent on a new department for studying how stem cells can replace or repair damaged organs.
The new facility, called the Institute for Cell Engineering, will be focusing on one of the century's most ground breaking forms of research, according to Dr. Elias Zerhouni, executive vice dean of John Hopkins' Medical School.
"In the life of the scientist, there are few things that happen that may have as much significance as what we are trying to do today, " he said in an interview with the Associated Press.
