The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved the One Touch Ultra blood-glucose monitoring system. Manufactured by LifeScan of Milpitas, California, the One Touch Ultra offers a number of features to support better diabetes management.
According to a February 13 LifeScan press release, the One Touch Ultra combines a less-painful alternative to traditional finger-stick testing with a five-second test time. According to LifeScan, most other meter systems take 30 to 50 seconds to show test results.
LifeScan adds that The One Touch Ultra also offers the broadest operating temperature range (43 to 111¡ Fahrenheit), giving people the freedom to test their blood glucose outdoors in a wider range of hot and cold conditions. The One Touch Ultra also requires only 1 microliter of blood for testing, and allows people to test on the arm where there are fewer nerve endings.
Steven Edelman, MD, a clinical endocrinologist and professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego says the real advantage of the One Touch Ultra is that it reduces some of the major barriers that are preventing people from testing their blood glucose on a daily basis.
"With a less painful, more convenient way of testing, patients will be more likely to follow their doctor's recommendations and better control their blood glucose," says Edelman.
The One Touch Ultra also includes a 150-test memory with time and date; 14- and 30-day test averaging; no cleaning and the option to download test data to a personal computer using LifeScan's In Touch Diabetes Management Software, version 1.32, available separately from LifeScan.
The One Touch Ultra meter is now available at pharmacies nationwide.
