Study Shows Consumption Helps Prevent Diabetes
Eating fruits and vegetables may help reduce the risk of diabetes, especially among women and people with higher education levels, according to a recent study published in the January issue of Preventive Medicine.
As part of the 20-year National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta studied 9,665 people between the ages of 25 and 74. Of the people in the survey, 10.5 percent of those studied developed diabetes. Those people who ate five or more fruits and vegetables per day were less likely to get the disease.
The researchers note there was a higher incidence of diabetes among women who did not eat as many fruits and vegetables than in men who did not.
Higher education levels also increased the likelihood that people get the disease.
