New Meter Lances, Collects Blood, and Gives Reading in 20 Seconds
On April 11, Abbot Laboratories MediSense Products announced that its alternate-site BG-monitoring Sof-Tact is now available.
Granted marketing clearance by the FDA on November 20, 2000, the Sof-Tact is the first monitor to offer lancing, blood collection and BG testing with a single press of a button. All of this is done in 20 seconds.
The Sof-Tact uses a unique vacuum mechanism that holds the skin in place while an integrated apparatus lances the skin. The blood is then automatically transferred to a low-volume bio-sensor strip and a result is given.
The Sof-Tact also allows samples to be drawn from less-sensitive areas of the body, such as the forearm or upper arm. It employs new strip technology that requires the use of two to three microliters of blood (one-third the amount of some other lancets). According to Abbott, in clinical trials, nine out of 10 patients rated the Sof-Tact as either "painless" or "much less painful" than traditional finger-stick testing.
