It may no longer be necessary to visit your doctor to get advice and the results of blood tests, according to researchers in Creteil, France, who presented their findings at the American Diabetes Association's scientific sessions in June. Using e-mail to send data from self blood glucose monitoring to your doctor and ask questions is efficient and economical, they say.
Researchers conducted a three-month study of 10 diabetes patients who were testing their blood glucose from home. The patients used In Touch software to send the results of their blood tests to their doctors via e-mail from a computer once a month.
Investigators found that it was easy for study participants to set up the software and transmit the data and for doctors to collect and record the data. They also found that clarification of the test results and advice on diabetes management in general was useful to the patients when received by e-mail. Participants maintained good blood sugar control based on e-mail communication with their doctors.
