MiniMed's Continuous Glucose Monitoring Device was used to measure the prevalence of nighttime hypoglycemia (BGs below 40 mg/dl) and associate the occurrence of nighttime hypos and interstitial glucose levels every five minutes in a study of 47 children with diabetes.
In a study presented at this past June's ADA scientific sessions, Francine Kaufman, MD, head of the division of endocrinology and metabolism at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, discovered that when using the MiniMed monitor for 167 nights, there was an interstitial glucose value of less than 40 mg/dl noted on 27 percent of the nights. In addition, the monitor discovered an interstitial value of less than 50 mg/dl on 35 percent of the nights.
Kaufman and colleagues also note that the MiniMed monitor revealed an average duration of nighttime hypoglycemia of 86.4 minutes if the bedtime interstitial glucose value was less than 100 mg/dl and 84.5 minutes if the bedtime level was greater than 100 mg/dl.
Kaufman concludes, "These results indicate there is a high prevalence of nocturnal hypoglycemia in pediatric pateints and that using the bedtime interstitial glucose level is of limited value."
